Singer | Visual Artist | Creatives

On June 3rd, I was joined by Gemini DJs to learn about who they are, what they do, why they do it, where they are going and where they started. The episode covered some of their inspirations in music, what their creative process looks like, and how they work so well or not so well together but more than that how they work out any disagreements and come out stronger than where they start anytime they sit down for a project.

About the Duo Group:

Gemini DJ’s is a duo group based in Pakistan, Islamabad, established in 2017 and started cranking it in late 2019. Yes, right when we were hit with a pause in our lives, while the world was going through its teen “It's not a faze, MOM” moment Gemini DJ’s were working on some sounds that when you'd listen to them the world doesn't seem all that bad.

Gemini is a shared stage consisting of Singer, songwriter, producer Mustafa Shabbir, and creative director and visual artist Mustafa Mirza. Gemini is in pursuit of exploring the different genres of music that influence the two as artists and appreciating the aesthetics and subcultures that come along with them, sometimes with an added Pakistani flavour to it, and people are loving it!

Gemini is growing and deservingly so. The group is currently sitting with over 6,000 followers on Spotify, 2,000 monthly Listeners, and a reach of 130 plus listeners in Dallas, US, and 400 plus listeners in Buffalo US.

Some Quotes:

“Gemini isn’t boxed into one genre- we don’t really have our own sound, and I don’t think we ever will. I want this to be a platform for us to explore everything and anything we want to and try to just figure out.. who are we as artists?” -Mustafa Mirza.

“I’m not a Dj, I’m not an artist. I’m a loner who loves one thing more than anything else, my music. You can hate me, love me or want me dead, but till I die I will work tirelessly to give kids like me a chance in this world and show you that you can be the best version of yourself” -Mustafa Shabbir.

“I take a lot of inspiration and easter eggs for all of my album art because that what makes it fun for me because I look back at it and see these are things I love” -Mustafa Mirza.

“If I'm pissing people off, I’m definitely doing something right” -Mustafa Shabbir.

A Little on Their Music:

We hear time and time again that an artist doesn't like to be restricted to one genre but it's not often that the words line up with their action. When Gemini DJs shared they don't have a single genre that they associate with and it really shows. Gemini is blessing us with bringing back our favorite nostalgic sound from the early 2000’s’ pop-punk/punk rock. And all while introducing it to Pakistani listeners to like never before to this degree. They’ve put out tracks like in English and Urdu and sometimes both in a single track.

You’ve got your laid-back slow tracks like “Teri Chahat” you also have your pop-punk sounds like Betty and veronica doing very well, the numbers show.

Ok, but wait. They really are exploring every genre out there because their latest release “TRP” is a troll track but executed just as well as anything else they have. (I still think there's a deeper meaning behind this one, but maybe we’ll find out about that in the future). You can check out the music video for “TRP” on their youtube channel.

More About Them:

Mustafa Mirza co-founded Gemini DJs and is acting creative director for the duo. He is in charge of creating the cover art you might see from their Spotify or youtube channel for the songs. He also takes care of directing, shooting, editing the music videos, as well as brainstorming ideas for new songs and albums. He is also in charge of any concepts and aesthetics for the brand of music you may pick up on.

Mustafa Shabbir is the other half of Gemini DJ’s, co-founding alongside Mustafa Mirza. He is in charge of all your favourite head-bobbing tracks that you hear from them. Songwriter, singer, performer. Shabbir doesn't just sing though; He himself produces and composes whatever tracks you may hear from them. Woah, but wait he play the drums too! the talent is endless from these two.

Look Out For:

An album coming your way. Go stream their most recent track “T.R.P”. Currently on all streaming platforms!
